Two Massachusetts men were busted attempting to smuggle drugs to female inmates at a state penitentiary over the weekend.

Authorities arrested 70-year-old Paul Roche, of Norfolk, and 44-year-old Taj Tatum, of Fall River, on Sunday after attempting to smuggle the drugs into the MCI-Framingham prison facility, according to the MetroWest Daily News.

Officials said corrections officers witnessed Tatum passing a plastic bag containing fentanyl to a prisoner while Roche was spotted trying to pass five oxycodone pills to another inmate.

The failed smuggling attempts occurred in the prison’s visiting area.

When investigators questioned Roche, he responded: “I know I made a mistake, but she told me to do it.”

The exact relationships between the suspects and inmates were not disclosed by authorities.

Investigators determined the inmates were anticipating the delivery of the drugs.

Both suspects pleaded not guilty Monday and were released with no bail.
