Four drug cartel gunmen were killed in a violent battle in the border city of Miguel Aleman in the Mexican state of Tamaulipas after a failed ambush on state officials.

The shootout occurred in the downtown section of Miguel Aleman when a crew of Gulf Cartel hitmen set up an ambush on Tamaulipas State Police officers, Breitbart Texas reported.

Mexican law enforcement officials said the officers combatted the initial attack, pushing the gunmen back and requested backup from Mexican military units.

The gun battle soon expanded to other areas, ultimately concluding in Barrera where officers killed four cartel gunmen in a black pickup.

The rest managed to flee even though military forces executed a series search operations to find the fleeing cartel members.

The battle is the most recent in a continuing string of clashes where Gulf Cartel gunmen target state officers.

Unlike other parts of the country, in Reynosa, state officers are heading the fight against cartel forces.

For over a year, the northern portion of Tamaulipas has been a war zone where rival cells of the Gulf Cartel battle for control of lucrative drug trafficking and human smuggling territories.

The fighting has resulted in over 500 murders in a year–only in Reynosa.
