A fierce gunbattle resulted in the deaths at least five people and another three wounded in the Mexican resort city of Cancun on Friday.

The Quintana Roo state prosecutor’s said in a statement that the shootout erupted around 9 p.m. after cartel gunmen opened fire at an enclosure next to a restaurant in Puerto Juarez, located ten miles from the city’s main tourist center.

According to local reports, the gunmen then engaged in a fierce firefight with local police forces arriving at the scene.

“Of the five killed, one was a ministerial police agent,” the official said.

Authorities further revealed that the four other victims killed apparently worked at the site.

Additionally, a local police commander was among the wounded. No tourists were harmed, the statement said.

Cancun and nearby resorts such as Playa del Carmen and Tulum remain a favorite vacation destination for American and European tourists each year.

However, since early 2017, drug-related violence has escalated in Quintana Roo between rival cartels.

So far this year, there have been 279 drug-related murders in Quintana Roo, according to Semaforo Delictivo.
