Mexican authorities raid Gulf cartel bunker near Texas Border

Mexican officials seized nearly $2 million in cash, firearms, and 130 kilos of cocaine concealed in a Gulf cartel bunker last week in the border state of Tamaulipas.

According to reports, Mexican officials indicated that an anonymous tip led to Tamaulipas police to execute a search warrant on a residence being employed as a stash house.

Once the home was raided, law enforcement officers found a hidden door behind two laundry machines that could only be accessed through an electronic control which activated the door.

Once the door was unlocked, police located underground bunker where they discovered 130 bricks of cocaine weighing roughly 286 pounds.

Mexican authorities recovered several high powered rifles during the raid

Several bundles of U.S. currency totaling $1,894,773 was recovered in the same room.

Officers also seized a .50 caliber rifle, three long rifles, three handguns, and ammunition.

Matamoros is recognized as the birthplace of the Gulf Cartel, the criminal gang that dominants the flow of drugs and immigrants in the region.

The faction of the Gulf Cartel which works in Matamoros is at war with another in the border city of Reynosa over territorial control.

The fighting has resulted in over 500 murders in Reynosa alone.
