Mexican authorities have arrested a local leader of the New Generation Cartel in the disappearance of three Italian men in the western state of Jalisco.

Mexico’s Attorney General’s Office said Monday that the suspect identified as Jose Guadalupe Rodriguez Castillo also known as “El 15,” a regional cartel leader, was arrested along with another man.

According to Milenio, the two suspects were detained in connection with the disappearances of 60-year-old Raffaele Russo, his 25-year-old son Antonio Russo and 29-year-old nephew Vincenzo Cimmino, from Naples, Italy.

The three Italian men went missing on Jan. 31 and have not been seen since.

Federal authorities previously arrested several local police officers in the case.

Officials said Rodriguez Castillo allegedly paid local municipal police in the town of Tecalitlan to turn the Italians over to members of the New Generation cartel.

Additionally, authorities said the two suspects were arrested with undisclosed amounts of methamphetamine, marijuana, and firearms.

The mayor of Tecalitlan was gunned down by assailants in early July.
