Texas law enforcement officials have announced the dismissal of a sheriff’s deputy after an embarrassing video showed him driving down a highway with an escaped inmate riding on the roof of his patrol car.

A spokesman with the Taylor County Sheriff’s Office spokesman said the deputy was fired for violating the policy on inmate safety and security, according to KSAT.

The officer was transporting the inmate identified as 31-year-old, Martin Gregory Estrada, 150 miles from a medical facility in Wichita Falls to Abilene on July 18th.

Authorities said at some point during the trek, Estrada managed to slip out of his handcuffs, smash the window and climb onto the roof of the patrol vehicle.

The deputy called for assistance but kept driving until backup units arrived.

A motorist trailing the patrol car managed to record footage of the daring escape attempt.
