Two plainclothes police officers in Camden, New Jersey shot in “unprovoked ambush attack”

CAMDEN, New Jersey – Two plainclothes New Jersey police officers were shot and wounded during an ambush as they sat in their vehicle at a red light Tuesday night.

Authorities said the two detectives were wounded in what law enforcement officials are calling an “unprovoked” attack in the city of Camden, located just across the Delaware River from Philadelphia.

“The information we have thus far is that they were essentially ambushed,” Camden County Police Chief J. Scott Thomson said at a late night press conference. “A male walked up and began opening fire. We have anywhere between 10 and 25 rounds that were fired at the officers.”

Thompson said one of the detectives managed to return fire but didn’t indicate whether anyone else was shot.

Emergency responders immediately rushed the two wounded detectives to a local area hospital, where both remain in serious but stable condition, according to ABC6.

“At this point in time our officers have non-life-threatening injuries but not for the grace of God quite frankly, the number of rounds that were fired at close range and particularly through the windshield,” Thompson added.

Authorities are actively searching for the suspect or suspect involved in the ambush.

“Maybe they did know they were police officers and that’s the reason why they did it. Maybe they thought they were somebody else. We’ll find that out as the investigation unfolds,” Thomson said.
