A bloody weekend in Chicago sees at least 40 people shot, four killed

Chicago experienced a surge in violence last weekend with the shooting of at least 40 people, four of which were fatal in a city that earlier had praised its decreasing crime and violence figures.

According to the Chicago Tribune, approximately 15 of the 40 victims shot were teens, 25 people were shot within two and a half hours of each other on Sunday.

Detectives continued their hunt for some of the shooters.

Chicago Police Chief of Patrol Fred Waller at a press conference Sunday said: “We know that some of these were targeted, and are related to gang conflicts in those areas.”

The shooting rampage started at approximately 11 a.m. Saturday when a 38-year-old man was struck in the Chicago Lawn area, according to the Tribune. Close to an hour later, two men in their 40s and 50s were hit with bullets when they were stuck in the crossfire between two people opening fire at each other from across the street.

The man in his 50s was dead by the time he arrived at the hospital.

On Saturday, between 1:30 and 5:30 p.m., three men — between the ages of 22 and 25— were shot in separate episodes throughout Chicago. It is not clear if the shooters have been apprehended.

However, the violence didn’t stop there. By 1 a.m. the next day another 18 people were victimized. A 20-year-old woman sustained a gunshot wound in the stomach when a passenger opened fire on her just after midnight in Logan Square.

Roughly five miles away in Lawndale, two people got out of a car, fired at a group of people at a block party and fled. Police said four people were shot, including a 13-year-old and 17-year-old boy, along with a 17-year-old. A 25-year-old man was hit in the left leg.

An 18-year-old was struck multiple times just before 12:30 p.m. in the same area.

Another eight people were shot before 1 a.m. when several shooters walked up to a group in a courtyard and began shooting. The youngest victim was 14 and the oldest was 35. The others were between 17 and 19 years old.

Roughly 10 minutes later, four people were injured in a drive-by incident.

Two 26-year-old men were hit in separate incidents by 1:30 a.m. Sunday and one of them succumbed to his injuries.

One hour later, three women were hit with crossfire while standing on a porch while two groups of men were firing at each other.

Six people were injured just before 3 a.m. when two shooters approached a group standing on a sidewalk. Two boys, 11 and 14, were among the injured.
