‘If you smell something, say something’: Mysterious foul odor plagues Utah City

A bizarre foul smell has one Utah city telling its residents if they “smell something, say something.”

According to FOX13, Locals have complained of an odor taking over West Valley City, and city officials are trying to ascertain where the smells originated.

“It’s a sewer type smell,” West Valley City communications director Sam Johnson said to FOX13. “It’s a musty, sewer smell that is very noticeable and unpleasant that you smell in certain parts of the city stronger, but it even comes to City Hall.”

The stench has tormented West Valley City for years. The city launched a campaign urging residents to contact city leaders so they can record complaints.

Johnson said the problem could be a waste processor outside of West Valley City by a landfill and a warm breeze could spread the smell into nearby areas.

The odor has locals bewildered.

“Sometimes when you’re walking it’s like death,” Nicholas Britton, a resident of West Valley City, said. “You’re like, what the heck? You’re looking around thinking ‘What the heck’s around?’ Maybe an animal.”

Johnson is hopeful that more complaints will persuade Salt Lake County and Utah’s Department of Environmental Quality to do something about the stench.
