Authorities in New York City arrested Wake Forest University assistant basketball coach Jamill Jones on assault charges in connection with the death of a Florida man during an altercation early Sunday.

NYPD investigators said the 35-year-old Jones punched Sandor Szabo, in the head following a confrontation in the trendy Long Island City section of Queens early Sunday.

The punch caused Szabo, also 35, to fall and hit his head on the pavement, knocking him unconscious, according to the New York Post.

Szabo was rushed to a local hospital where he died two days later.

Jones reportedly fled the scene in a white SUV.

Police officials have not indicated the circumstances or evidence that led to his arrest.

Jamill Jones was entering his second season as an assistant under head coach Danny Manning.

Additionally, NYPD officials said investigators are awaiting a medical examiner’s report to determine whether the punch directly led to Szabo’s death, before deciding to upgrade charges against Jones.

Wake Forest’s athletic department issued a statement following the arrest, which read: “We have just been made aware of this matter and we are gathering information. We will make a further statement after we learn more about the matter.”
