Cartel gunmen killed Christian Humberto Suárez, a young up-and-coming Mexican soccer player along with his mother during an attack near the Texas border.

Humberto Suárez played for Real Club San Cosme in the fifth-tier division of the Mexican soccer league.

Mexico’s Football Federation (Femexfut) released a statement lamenting the death of Suárez.

The deadly attack occurred Wednesday on a stretch of the Río Bravo-Reynosa highway, according to Proceso.

Tamaulipas state authorities said the 16-year-old soccer player nicknamed “El Capi” was returning with his family after playing a match in Valle Hermoso when their vehicle was intercepted by armed assailants.

When the family failed to obey demands to stop the vehicle, the gunmen opened fire killing Christian Humberto Suárez and his mother, Fabiola Hernández Romero.

Christian Humberto Suárez, 16, was tragically killed during an attack in Northern Tamaulipas.

His father and sister also sustained serious injuries and both remain hospitalized in Reynosa.

The area where the attack occurred has been engulfed by a violent turf war between two rival factions of the Gulf Cartel.

The ongoing violence has claimed 500 lives including many innocent civilians since May 2017.
