FBI agents arrested eighteen people on federal drug trafficking and weapons charges in the Mississippi Delta.

The arrests were announced during a Tuesday press conference by U.S. Attorney Chad Lamar, Special Agent in Charge Christopher Freeze, and Cleveland Police Chief Charles Bingham.

One suspect was reportedly wounded in an FBI-involved shooting.

According to the Clarion-Ledger, the arrests were made following a lengthy investigation into violent street gang activity.

Freeze noted the investigation initiated following an increase in violent crime in the region.

Meanwhile, FBI spokesman Brett Carr confirmed that an agent involved a shooting on Tuesday in Cleveland, Mississippi left a suspect wounded.

Officials have yet to reveal what prompted the shooting or if the suspect fired on federal agents first.

Carr did indicate that the agency has launched an internal investigation but refused to further comment.
