Dallas Police officer Amber Guyger charged with the off-duty shooting of her black neighbor

A white police officer in Dallas was charged with manslaughter in the off-duty shooting of a black neighbor after she reportedly mistook his apartment for her own.

The Texas Department of Public Safety said in a press release that Officer Amber Guyger was arrested in connection with the Thursday’s shooting of 26-year-old Botham Jean.

Guyger was booked Sunday night into the Kaufman County Jail and was later released after posting bond, according to CBS-DFW.

The shooting sparked outrage on social media and prompted widespread demands for Guyger’s arrest.

Officials said the investigation remains ongoing and no additional information was made available.

Initially, Guyger was given a slap on the wrist and requested a leave of absence.

However, according to S. Lee Merritt, the lawyer for Botham’s family, after obtaining new evidence in the case, the Dallas District Attorney’s Office decided to file charges against the officer.
