On Thursday, four state law enforcement officers were killed and six were injured in a cartel-related attack in the western mountainous area of Chihuahua.

The Chihuahua state officers were assaulted on a road near Bocoyna while going back to their base after escorting three detainees to the town of Cuauhtémoc, according to the state attorney general’s office.

Gunmen who are alleged to belong to the La Linea cartel attacked the cops in an area identified as “El Nogal” in a mountainous region located roughly 150 miles west of Chihuahua City, according to the El Paso Times.

The La Linea cartel is also as the Juárez cartel.

According to El Heraldo de Chihuahua, patrol vehicles burst into flames when up to 40 cartel members began shooting while lurking uphill on a mountain.

State officials initially indicated that three officers were murdered, four were injured, and one was still missing.

State Security Commissioner Oscar Alberto Aparicio Avendaño revealed that a massive amount of police officers were dispatched to the mountains to help find the attackers.

The attacks on police will not remain unpunished, Aparicio Avendaño vowed in a statement.

The rural area of western Chihuahua has been the center of repeated violence as drug-trafficking enterprises fight for control of the region.
