Motorists caught in the middle of border city gunbattle between rival Gulf Cartel factions: WATCH

Video captured the moment motorists were caught by surprise as rival cartel groups engage in a gun battle in the Mexican state of Tamaulipas, last week.

State authorities said the altercation occurred when gunmen with the “Metros” faction of the Gulf Cartel (CDG) in Reynosa went to Rio Bravo to attack their rivals.

Soon after, Mexican military units soon arrived on the scene leading to a multi-front gun battle, according to reports.

CDG cells have engaged in turf wars now lasting over a year.

Citizen reporters filmed the moments when the battle erupted along one of the city’s main thoroughfares.

Tamaulipas law enforcement officials did not indicate if any cartel operatives or military personnel were killed in the armed confrontation.

Rio Bravo is located directly south of Donna, Texas, and is considered a significant smuggling passage for the Gulf Cartel.

Originally, Rio Bravo was dominated by “Los Metros,” however, as time progressed, their rivals from Matamoros succeeded in establishing a presence there.

Recently, three Gulf Cartel gunmen were killed in a battle in Reynosa. One is reportedly the brother of a cartel commander identified as “Pezon.”
