Arizona man posed as Down syndrome sufferer to dupe caregivers into giving him baths, changing diapers

Arizona’s Family

Authorities have accused an Arizona man of posing as a Down syndrome sufferer so he could hire caregivers to bathe him and change his diapers.

According to KTNV, Gilbert Police arrested 31-year-old Paul Anthony Menchaca, at the home of his parents on Sept. 6 after female caregivers discovered he didn’t have special needs.

The first caregiver responded in May to an ad on CareLinx, a site designed to help families find licensed homecare.

Menchaca contacted and hired the helper while allegedly posing as “Amy,” the mother of a special needs man afflicted with Down syndrome.

An arrest affidavit obtained by AZFamily said the suspect told the three victims to ‘punish’ [Menchaca] “whenever he soiled his diaper by taking away his privileges and placing him in timeout.”

Police officials said the caregiver told investigators that woman helped bathe and change the man’s diapers on 30 separate occasions.

Additionally, Menchaca reportedly told her that his genitals were not cleaned enough on five different occasions.

In the following months, two more caregivers were hired by referral, agreeing on the similar job terms

All three women claimed that Menchaca became sexually aroused when he was being bathed.

After raising suspicions, the first caregiver followed Mechaca back to his parents’ home.

“[The victim] was greeted by [Menchaca’s] actual mother and father and discovered [Menchaca] did not have Down syndrome and did not require diaper changes,” the police report said.

He reportedly admitted to lying about having Down syndrome after being confronted by all three women.

Menchaca was subsequently arrested on charges including sexual abuse and committing fraudulent schemes.
