South Carolina authorities have confirmed that two chained mental health inmates died inside a transport van that was overcome with flood water Tuesday night.

According to WPDE, the incident occurred around 8:45 p.m. in Horry County on Highway 917 on the Pee Dee Island Road near the bridge.

South Carolina law enforcement officials said the deputies who were transporting the two inmates were rescued after the van was overtaken by flooded water.

However, officials said the two female patients who were chained in the back of the van died from drowning.

The inmates were reportedly being transported from Waccamaw Mental Health Hospital to McLeod Behavioral Health in Darlington.

Horry County Sheriff Phillip Thompson said in a statement: “Tonight’s incident is a tragedy. Just like you, we have questions we want answered. We are fully cooperating with the State Law Enforcement Division to support their investigation of this event.”
