Mexican authorities took one suspect into custody who has been reportedly linked to the slaying of a reporter in the border state of Tamaulipas.

So far this year, there are reportedly 13 cases of unsolved killings targeting journalists in Mexico.

Irving Barrios Mujica, the Attorney General in Tamaulipas, revealed that a man only identified as Omar Zuriel “N” was arrested for his role in the killing of journalist Hector Gonzalez Antonio in Ciudad Victoria.

According to local reports, The motive is being described as a robbery. However, the state of Tamaulipas has seen a dramatic increase in cartel violence due to territorial conflicts.

In late May, police recovered Gonzalez’s bloody remains in a vacant lot in Ciudad Victoria. Gonzalez worked as a correspondent for Excelsior and worked for multiple press outlets in the years prior.

On the day he was killed, Gonzalez left his girlfriend’s residence when he was stopped on a road by armed assailants.

Gonzalez declined to give up his car and valuables to at least three male suspects. The men reportedly beat Gonzalez to death before taking his car and fleeing the scene.

Authorities said, through the use of surveillance footage, they managed to decipher times, types of cars used, and routes taken by the suspects. Surveillance cameras allowed police to identify and apprehended Zuriel.

Gonzalez is the second reporter killed in Tamaulipas so far this year.

In January, a group of assassins attacked and killed columnist and semi-retired journalist Carlos Dominguez Rodriguez in Nususpectsdo. Dominguez was stabbed in front of his family. Police arrested a family member of the former mayor of Nuevo Laredo and several other suspcets allegedly tied to the murder.
