Arizona man robbed a Mesa bank to repay debt owed to drug cartel: Cops

Authorities say an Arizona man reportedly robbed a bank to pay back a debt owed to a Mexican drug cartel.

According to ABC15, Mesa police officers responded to reports of a bank robbery on September 15th.

Officials said 55-year-old Jeffry Lyn Tuffly entered the bank, slipped a note to a teller threatening to detonate a bomb if the bank employee refused to fork over $60,000 in cash.

The teller complied with his demands and gave Tuffly $4,000 in cash. He subsequently fled the bank before he was followed by unmarked police units.

Tuffly noticed he was being trailed and drove his vehicle at high speeds through a retention basin and into a residential neighborhood.

The suspect reportedly started discarding the stolen cash out of the car before surrendering to pursuing officers.

He allegedly told investigators that he robbed the bank to pay off a drug debt that he owed to Mexican drug cartel.

Police charged Tuffly with armed robbery and theft.
