An elusive fugitive who has remained on the lam after escaping a Louisiana prison over a decade ago was arrested in Mexico.

Authorities said inmate Lonnie Payne was serving a 12-year sentence for burglary when he escaped from East Feliciana Parish Prison in Clinton back in 2003.

East Feliciana Sheriff’s Criminal Deputy Greg Phares said late Friday that the now-44-year-old was arrested in Mexico and promptly extradited in Conroe, Texas, where he is awaiting a return to the Louisiana prison.

According to The Advocate, Payne managed to flee the facility after trimming grass between two security fences.

At the time, officials said Payne managed to sneak through a gate he had purposely left unlocked before scaling an 8-foot outer fence and escaping the detention center.

Officials haven’t indicated how investigators managed to track him down.
