Texas authorities discover $18M worth of cocaine hidden in banana shipment

Texas law enforcement officials got more than they anticipated on Friday when a local port provided them with 45 boxes of unclaimed bananas.

Beneath the fruit, the boxes included nearly $18 million worth of cocaine.

Two pallets of bananas were donated to the Texas Department of Criminal Justice (TDCJ), the department revealed in a statement.

The Ports of America in Freeport, located 60 miles south of Houston, gave the fruit to officials because they remained unclaimed, KHOU reported.

The bananas were given to officials because they were ripe, the TDCJ indicated, but two sergeants felt that “something was not quite right” with the pallets.

When they opened one of the boxes stamped with “certified organic bananas,” they discovered bundles of a white powdery substance below the fruit, which later tested positive for cocaine.

In total, officials discovered 540 packages of cocaine worth almost $18 million.

The DEA and U.S. Customs and Border Protection have launched an investigation into the incident.
