Mounting cartel violence in the Mexican state of Sonora continued last week with five murders over the weekend in the municipalities of Hermosillo and Ciudad Obregón.

According to local news outlets, a double homicide which took place on Friday in Ciudad Obregón marked the 31st homicide so far this month.

Officials are now raising alarms that the cartel violence will further escalate in the border state, which for the most part has not seen the amount of violence encountered in other areas of the country.

The violence occurred on the heels of the horrific discovery last week in the rural area of Bácum, Sonora where authorities found seven heads packed in an ice cooler.

The murders elicited fears of an increase in an ongoing territorial cartel war.

The state has long remained a stronghold of the Sinaloa Cartel.

Initial reports showed that last Friday’s discovery and the increase in violence could be due to a territorial conflict between Sinaloa Cartel faction known as “Gente Nueva” or the “New People” — and the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG).

Other reports show that the violence could be due to a turf war between the Sinaloa Cartel’s “Los Chapitos” (the sons of “El Chapo” Guzman with Gente Nueva against reputed drug lord Fausto Isidro Meza Flores, also known as “Chapo Isidro.”

The latter is a former Sinaloa cartel associate now heading remnants of the Beltran Leyva Cartel

Friday’s violence started in Hermosillo, Sonora in the middle of the day in colonia Lomas del Pitic when a 32-year-old male only known as Israel, aka Chabelo, was killed.

The victim tried to fight off shooters who pulled up in two cars and tried to kidnap him. Israel fought back and pulled out a gun.

He opened fire, injuring one of the kidnappers but was shot and killed by the others. The wounded kidnapper later died from his injuries.

The second episode occurred in Ciudad Obregón at just before 5:30 pm, when cartel associates in a white pickup truck shot their rifles at two males in a Volkswagen Jetta.

The two victims suffered from numerous gunshot wounds and died instantly as the gunmen fled. Detectives from the state attorney general’s office later found more than 50 shell casing at the scene.

Several clips were posted on social media which recorded the sound of the gunmen attacking the victims with rounds of gunfire—one video was taken inside a local restaurant.

The third event took place in Hermosillo in Colonia Fuentes del Mezquital at roughly 8 pm when a male was shot and killed by unidentified gunmen while he was in front of his house.
