A robbery suspect Arizona who fired at police after reportedly stealing a bottle of milk from a Walmart store was shot and killed when officers returned shots.

A staffer at the Walmart in Peoria, located near Phoenix, had called authorities at roughly 6 p.m. Monday to report the stolen milk, The Arizona Republic reported.

The robbery suspect was later identified as 20-year-old Michael John Stout.

Responding officers indicated that they saw a man matching the employee’s description of Stout outside of the Walmart’s garden center.

Authorities say as officers exited their patrol vehicle, Stout brandished a firearm and shot one round in their direction before firing multiple rounds into their car.

The officer who was in the vehicle got out and returned fire, while the other officer fired from inside the car.

The officer’s rounds struck Stout and he fell to the ground. The officers administered medical assistance to Stout. Law enforcement officials said Stout was rushed to a hospital where he was pronounced dead the next day.

Detectives learned that Stout had been using a handgun that was robbed from a vehicle on Monday morning. The officers’ body cam footage has not yet been made available.

No one else was wounded during the incident.
