Police arrest suspect in shooting death of LSU basketball player Wayde Sims

Louisiana authorities have arrested a suspect in the fatal shooting of LSU basketball player Wayde Sims.

Baton Rouge Police announced the arrest of 20-year-old Dyteon Simpson on Saturday.

According to CNN, Simpson faces second-degree murder and remains in custody at the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison on no bond.

Wayde Sims, 20, was gunned down early Friday during a street fight near the Southern University campus that was caught on video.

During a press conference on Saturday, Baton Rouge Police Chief Murphy Paul investigators gathered evidence from the footage and used DNA collected at the scene to distinguish Simpson as the gunman.

Paul said detectives managed to identify Simpson as the male who could be seen in the video punching a friend of Sims during the fracas just before the shooting.

“Wayde stepped in to defend his friend and was shot by Simpson,” Paul said.

The Louisiana State Police fugitive task force, the state police crime lab, Southern University police and local residents assisted in the investigation resulting in the arrest.

DNA testing on eyeglasses found at the scene matched that of Simpson.

Simpson was arrested without incident after admitting to investigators that he was at the scene of the fight, had a gun and fired it at Sims.

LSU athletic director Joe Alleva thanked area law enforcement for its “diligence and pursuit of justice.”

The 6-foot-6 forward averaged 5.6 points and 2.6 rebounds a game last season. He grew up in Baton Rouge, where his father, Wayne, also played basketball for LSU.
